The 16th London (Westminster Rifles) battalion arrived in France in November 1914 and joined 18 Brigade, 6th Division. On 24th November, 1914 they went into the trenches for the first time at La Houssoie, near Armentieres where they remained for the rest of the month often under shell and sniper fire. John Cunnington died from wounds on 29th November but the exact day on which he was wounded is not known.
